Included Five-story Tower when Originally Built

Once a graceful,　dignified tower five stories high stood in Nijo Castle,which the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu had built in 1602.We can still see how it appeared and was situated by looking at the folding screen painting of the period,　entitled “Sights in and around Kyoto”(Shoko-ji Temple,　Takaoka City).The castle’s tall donjon must have seemed to be glaring down upon the city of Kyoto,　the symbol　of a power which easily surpassed the Emperor’s.
